Goal

The goal of this project is to understand consumer needs and challenges during home renovations and to design a new mobile app and responsive web platform based on the findings.

Process

Research

I collaborated with a research agency during the research process to gather data from 8 focus group discussions, 12 in-depth interviews, and 800 surveys. The focus group discussions and interviews aimed to gather insights about the experiences, needs, and challenges faced by consumers and professionals in the building materials industry. The survey aimed to gauge the perception and potential of a new platform being planned in this sector among consumers who have recently renovated their homes or plan to do so in the near future.

Benchmark

I led the team in analyzing local and global product examples through a benchmark study. This allowed us to learn about the primary functions of products in the market.

Main Functions titles;
· Home page · Filtering · Product Detail · Shopping Cart · Check Out · Inspiration

Key benchmark findings on two titles

Product Detail

· Offering the service in customizable packages (Vivense Touch)
· Bundling items for purchase (IKEA)
· Providing a technical document download option (VitrA)
· Allowing customers to share products with others (Koçtaş)

Shopping Cart

· Estimated delivery time displayed (Koçtaş)
· Option to purchase assembly package (Koçtaş)
· Order summary with product total, shipping cost, and applied discounts (Trendyol)

Netnography

I led the team to review users’ comments about Eczacıbaşı Group’s existing brands and competitors. We aimed to learn the pain points of users who use products of Eczacıbaşı brands and their competitors.

Netnography findings titles;

· Inspirational Content · Commission Rates · Product and Service Warranty · Expert Support · Service Fee

Key netnography findings on two titles

Service Fee

· Users are hesitant to seek professional advice because the price is unknown and may be high. They are looking for ways to make it more affordable.

Inspirational Content

· Inspirational decoration contents increase the motivation of the user.

· Being exposed to different decoration suggestions makes users want to make changes.

Customer Journey Map

I conducted a Customer Journey Map to gather insights from both strategy research and our own research. I played a key role in deciding which titles to organize the findings under and identified the problems that users experience at various stages of their journey. I also identified pain points that can be addressed through design and identified issues in the overall user experience journey.

Key takeaways from the Customer Journey Map analysis

Ideation

I generated ideas as a team through idea cards and workshops to create the main concept for the project. I also developed an information architecture and user flow to establish the main framework of the product and to discuss manufacturability constraints with the client’s software team.

Idea Concepts

I pioneered the generation of different ideas as a team by creating idea cards and organizing workshops within the team. I also held workshops with the customer. Before creating the wireframes, I determined the main functions that will create the UX concept in order to mature the solution proposals.

Architect Influencers” and “Digital Showroom” were the prominent concepts we reached at the end of this process.

User Flow & Information Architecture

I created an information architecture that includes a user flow of generated ideas and agreed functions. Before producing the wireframe, I carried out this work to determine the main framework of the product. I took the first decisions about the main functions that will form the UX Concept and their relationship with each other. Afterwards, we started to discuss the manufacturability constraints with the client’s software team through this study.

Functions included in the flow;

Home page · Inspiration · Categories · Favorites · Search · Product Listing · Product Detail · Checkout · Shopping Cart · Architect’s Profile & Projects · Service Packages · Workshops & Events · Matching the Architect Quiz

UX Concept & Wireframing

By making lo-fi & hi-fi wireframes, I created the main framework of the product in accordance with the information architecture. I clarified the main structure with different iterations. To advance solution proposals before generating final wireframes I determined the main functions that will form the UX Concept.

Usability Testing

I led the team in the preparation of the prototype of the product whose visual experience was completed and in the preparation of the test plan. This was the most exciting stage to validate the design by bringing the basic functions of the product to the user. I completed the prototype to perform usability testing of the product.

Pages included in the test;

Prototype & Usability Testing Outcomes

Test Scenario - 1 (Architecture Flow)

Task 1

You learned that architecture service is offered in the Decoverse application. You want to work with a Scandinavian architect to renovate your bathroom. How would you go about finding an architect suitable for this style and examining their projects?

10 participants accomplished this task.

Test Scenario - 2 (Inspiration Flow)

Task 1

In the Decoverse application, you are looking for inspiration for the wall ceramics you will use in your bathroom. You are looking for a light blue ceramic tile to match your furniture. How would you go about finding and saving tiles that suit your preference?

12 participants accomplished this task.

Task 2

You have found the architect you are looking for and you have examined the bathtub options with him and saved the ones you like to your favorites list. You like the Aqua Soft Oval Tub on your list and you want to buy it, but you realize that you cannot set it up alone. How do you solve your problem on this screen?

11 participants accomplished this task.

Task 2

You browsed the inspiration page for a while, added certain products to your favourites. Now you have decided to buy a 10×10 Tile Blue product among your favourites. You have measured your bathroom, you have calculated that the required area for tiles is 15 m2. How do you perform the purchasing process with this information?

10 participants accomplished this task.

Task 3

Now you have selected your bathtub, added other products to your cart and you are ready to buy. You need the tub to be delivered on April 12, 2022 at 10:00, how would you go about it and complete your purchase?

7 participants accomplished this task.

Development

From the creation of the first drafts in the Ideation step, I have progressed in close contact with the software developers in the client team. I have progressed by always considering the modularity and manufacturability of the designs, which we have completed with the MVP approach. With the completion of the main screens, the development process started and I delivered other features through Figma in accordance with the plan.

Next Steps

Decoverse is now an MVP, what are the next steps?

· Accessibility improvements

· Small details and interaction improvements

· Reviewing modules with new content to be produced

· Breakpoints need to considered for some modules and different resolutions for more seamless responsive experience

· Since some functions are delayed in prioritization within the scope of the MVP project, these functions should be studied in detail in accordance with the user’s experience journey.

What would I do differently next time?

Before UI designs, I would get more detailed information from the client about the content. It would save me a lot of time on some of the reworks I did.
